CYMBIDIUM 'Ensifolium, Yellow-Pink'

The genus has about a hundred recognized species of which fewer than twenty have been used in horticulture. They are lip shapped.

Modern Cymbidium hybrids can be traced back to species C. pumilum (syn. C floribundum) and the heat-tolerant species C. ensifolium.

Distribution: India, Japan and down to Australia

They make excellent pot plants and cut flowers. Incidentally their flowering period coincides with the Winter Christmas season in the West.

These semi-terrestrial orchids have narrow, fleshy, and leathery, strap shaped leaves and the flowers have irregular, waxy, almost translucent petals with entire margins. Center is often a contrasting color.

Temperature: Prefer cool to medium heat. 10 - 30 Deg Cel will be an ideal temperature for Cymbidium. A temperature drop in the night is essential for flowering.

Light: Requires bright light but has to be indirect. The plants are phototropic and grows faster with good sunlight.

Humidity: 60% or higher. Good air movement essential. Humidity will prevent crinkled leaves.

Water: Needs to be constantly wet but should not stay in water.

Potting: Tree bark and coconut fibre are good medium. Repotting every other year preferably in spring. Use larger pots to allow 2 years growth.

Fertilizer: High Nitrogen: Phospherous: Pottassium (NPK)= 30:10:10 ideal mix for spring during growth. For flowering high Pottassium NPK = 10:10:30 by the nd of summer.
